The caveat that matters most here is that the top-30 cut shapes the conclusion. Forest share selects the 30 countries with the highest value in the latest year, so countries that lost a great deal of forest are screened out before the chart is drawn. Concluding from a 1.84-point fall in the 30-country average that the world's forests have barely shrunk would be wrong.
