About this ranking
About this metric. “Milk Production by Country (Time Series)” reformats data published by Our World in Data (mostly re-published World Bank / UN public statistics) (OWID Grapher slug “milk-production”). Values are expressed in million tonnes.
What to watch. The great reversal: the United States led in 1961 when India produced barely 20 million tonnes; today India tops 248 million — more than double the US — on the back of the cooperative-led “White Revolution”. Millions of smallholders out-producing industrial dairies is the story here.
Caveats. India’s total includes large volumes of buffalo milk, which most other countries barely produce, so the series mixes different animals under one label. Smallholder output is also harder to measure than industrial dairy production, making estimates softest where farms are smallest.
Trends in the data
India passed the United States in 1997. In 1961 India produced 20.38 million tonnes, about a third of America’s 57.02 million. It took 36 years to catch up, and it has widened the gap ever since: 247.84 million tonnes in 2024 against the United States’ 102.48 million, a factor of 2.4. Growth of 12.16× over 63 years stands out among these 30 countries. What makes the line unusual is less the year of the overtaking than the fact that it kept accelerating afterwards.
In multiples, some countries beat even India. China grew 24.83×, from 1.83 million tonnes in 1961 to 45.44 million in 2024, climbing from 21st to 4th. Pakistan grew 11.11×, from 6.00 to 66.67 million tonnes, from 12th to 3rd; Bangladesh moved from 25th to 13th and Brazil from 14th to 5th. Every country that broke into the upper ranks is in Asia or South America; the map of dairy production has been substantially redrawn in sixty years.
Europe and Oceania present the opposite picture. Denmark went from 5.52 million tonnes in 1961 to 5.69 million in 2024 — a rise of just 3% in 63 years. Production did not fall, yet its rank dropped sixteen places, from 13th to 29th. Canada grew 1.20× and fell from 8th to 19th, Australia 1.38× from 11th to 21st, Italy from 7th to 16th, Poland from 5th to 11th and the United Kingdom from 6th to 12th. Countries that did not grow get pushed out — the characteristic rank behaviour of an expanding market.
The 30-country total grew 3.6×, from 230 million tonnes in 1961 to 835 million in 2024. Note that only 29 countries have a 2024 value; Ireland is missing. When reading the latest ranking, do not assume every country is present — a late reporter’s absence moves everyone below it up a place. Note also that this series measures raw milk produced, not consumed. A large producer is not necessarily a large consumer of dairy: some output is processed for export, and some is consumed locally because transport networks are limited. Converted to a per-person basis the ranking is a completely different one. India’s output also includes a large share of buffalo milk, and where the United States and Europe produce at industrial scale, India reached first place by aggregating countless smallholders.
